Happy Birthday Sis

Posted by Picasa

A sister named Charlie? Yes. Her name was originally Shirley, until she had a childhood friend who couldn't say Shirley and morphed her name into Charlie. She has been Charlie since that friend. Hmmm...I wonder if that's why I became a speech therapist.

Hope you have a great day Sis!

Happy Birthday

Posted by Picasa

Happy Birthday to a toad catcher extraordinaire. May this Great Toad bring you great luck.

Note: When Tall Son was a boy, he loved toads. I would find live toads in his sock drawer, in the tub, under his bed, swimming in the toilette bowl...you name the place, there was a fat toad there, hopping around. To this day, Tall Son believes that toads bring good luck, though in the past, all that his toads brought were squeals and frantic hopping from this frightened Mom. Happily, he settles for one large bronze toad next to his front door these days.

Vintage...Verging on Antique

Happy Birthday to Us!

Today is my birthday, which I share with thousands of others, passed and present. Here are a few of my favorites with whom I would love (excuse me Shakespeare: "with whom I should like...") to celebrate:

  • Judy Davis, born in Perth Australia in 1955; actress; for her sheer acting talent and for growing more interesting and beautiful with each year.
  • Shirley Temple, child actress and dancer; 1928 (There, but for the lack of talent, go I.)
  • William Shakespeare, 1564, playwright, died on his birthday 52 years later and left us with questions to ponder, e.g., "To be or not to be?..."
  • Halston, fashion designer; 1932. Hall of Fame in 1972. He taught us that black is the only chic color to throw on or off.
  • Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, 1547; Spanish writer; wrote Don Quixote, inspiring many of us to confront our windmills.
  • Max Planck, German Physicist, 1858; just because Physicists are so damn sexy!
Happy Birthday, Gang! Just imagine the party if we all got together.

Strange Thing: While checking out the new flowers in the garden at My Ranchburger early this morning, I felt compelled to look into the mailbox. No reason to, as I had already gotten the mail yesterday evening and the postal carrier had not made his rounds today. But there in the mail box was a birthday card from my sister. It must have been delivered to the wrong address yesterday and a good neighbor dropped it by...on my birthday.

Happy Birthday Alexander

Happy Birthday, Alexander. We wish we could be with you on your special day. We send a greeting with Tintin and Milou because you were the one who introduced us to your favorite characters when you were a small boy living in Paris. When I see those two, I remember the times we hunted, in Paris and later in Brussels, Tintin books and paraphernalia. I treasure the memories of hours spent reading all your Tintin adventures together (rather, your reading to us in French and sometimes in English...after you heard our French!)

We send our love and wish you the best year ever!

P.S. Are you running with the bulls in Spain again this summer?  Don't let us know!

Saara, Happy Birthday!

You have expanded my world with your intellectual pursuits and given me so much happiness. Thank you for being in my life and making it so interesting. May this birthday bring you happy surprises.

Note: Saara is a great friend; gourmet cook, organizer extraordinaire; has the business head of a mogul; is a lover of literature and cinema; a wise and caring teacher to small children; speaks several languages; is a talented stylist for photo shoots; is attentive to family, near and extended; is a fantastic gardener; is an excellent wife and mother of twin daughters; and finds time to be a great daughter-in-law to me.

Happy Birthday Michael!

Michael at three-weeks old, posing for his first passport photo in Germany.

On this day in history, you (still in utero) and I boarded a U.S. Army medical evacuation chopper for the flight to the Army hospital in Nuremberg, Germany. As previously planned, a team of Army doctors was also flying in to attend what they thought would be a difficult delivery.

The night before the flight, your father, sister and I had gone to see what sort of chopper was on the landing pad in front of the small Army clinic in Hohenfels where we lived. The next day was your estimated date of arrival, so we were especially curious. We knew that any division training at Hohenfels was responsible for providing the medical evac chopper. We also knew that a division of the Bundeswier was training there that week. As we approached the area we saw it looming on the horizon: a small German chopper with external litters! As you know, I'm terrified of heights. Riding inside a chopper would be an act of bravery on my part; but to be transported on the outside of the craft with a tarp strapped over me was unfathomable!

Sure enough, you decided to be on time. In the wee hours of the morning, your father drove me to the small clinic. As we approached the clinic, I averted my eyes. I just couldn't look at that mosquito of a chopper. Your father demanded that I look. There, waiting on the landing pad, instead of the mosquito, was a huge, new U.S. Army helicopter.

You had the good manners to not be born on the chopper, though we were not certain we were going to make Nuremberg before you decided to arrive. The pilot had already radioed to determine your place of birth, should you be born in the air.

There are certain moments in our lives together that are like freeze frames in my head. The first time I saw you is one of those moments. In the delivery room, as I was coming through a fog, I heard, "It's a boy! And what a boy!"

I struggled to focus my eyes and saw that a doctor was holding up very large child with a gloved hand under each arm pit. I laughed, "OK, you guys, where did you get that toddler? You are such jokers!" But it was you; all 9.5 pounds of you, already grown to two feet tall! And you seemed to be giving me the same scrutiny you display in your first passport photo above.

Though we dragged you all over the world and though I wish we had been better parents, you were a wise, realist of a child who turned yourself into a wonderful adult. You have always had a driving curiosity that has given you a passion for life. You have always been thoughtful, moral, ethical, truthful and intellectual in all things. And you have kept me laughing with your intellectual wit and your strange, but realistic take on the world. I am so glad you are in my life.

Happy birthday, Son!

Happy Birthday Beatrix Potter!

Happy Birthday, Miss Potter
July 28, 1866-December 22, 1943

Did you actually believe that we at The Bunny Bungalow would forget that today is the birthday of Beatrix Potter?  We could never forget the creator of such a delightful bunny world.  Happy Birthday, Miss Potter.

P.S. Click on the photograph of the Peter Rabbit cup to find the tiny "flaw" and learn why he is Peter Rabbit.  The other cup in the tea set is not thus endowed.

First Saturday: June

Antique Bunnies, Grace Heart Antiques, Houston, Texas; first bunnies to arrive at The Bunny Bungalow

Posted by Picasa

Tall Husband is, at this moment, planting large pots of white hydrangeas for the front walk of the Bungalow. He is also putting in a watering system for each of the large pots. For my part, I'm staying out of his way.

Today is First Saturday, a big day in the Heights. As we are invited to a good friend's surprise birthday party tonight, I will not be covering the Heights events, but will probably have news from the party, as there will be physicians, musicians, actors and other interesting guests there.

We will attend an antique/classic car show tomorrow. I love old cars, so look for some great shots on Monday's blog.
