Topping Out

Posted by Picasa

As the construction crew put the last roof beam up, we had an impromptu topping out ceremony today at the Bunny Bungalow. You probably know that this is a tradition of placing a small tree (usually a fir tree) atop a building when all the roofing beams are in place.

Tall Husband found a small Laural tree in the alley that had survived the recent freeze and that's what a member of the crew placed at the highest point. The crew is Hispanic and not familiar with a tradition with its origin in the European culture but they were eager to help us celebrate.

Gracias, hombres!

Note: There will be more photos in the slide show to the right.

  1. Wow....things are coming right along! Looking good...and love the topping out! I'm in commercial real estate and that a very common practice. Haven't seen too much of it in residential but you've never been one to follow the crowd, right?! :)

  4. Not a tradition I had ever heard of before, but I like it. Celebration indeed. How encouraging it is to cheer things along, especially big projects that can lose momentum amidst the daily grind...like building a home. Our home building enterprise took nearly 3 years...we need a few fir tree moments...if only we had known. Congrats!
